As a national key university funded by the Henan Provincial Government and the State Ministry of Education, Zhengzhou University was founded through the merger of three universities: former Zhengzhou University, the Zhengzhou University of Technology, and Henan Medical University. Zhengzhou University has an abundance of resources. The University now has four main campuses occupying an area of 1070 acres, of which the New Campus comprises 799 acres. 

(1). History 

Zhengzhou University was established in 1956. It is the first university established by the PRC in Henan Province. In 1992, Huanghe University (Yellow River University) was merged into Zhengzhou University. On July 10, 2000, Zhengzhou University of Technology and Henan Medical University were merged into Zhengzhou University.

Backed up with a sound talent nurturing system, Zhengzhou University offers 107 undergraduate programs, 55 first-discipline master’s degree programs, 237 second-discipline master’s degree programs, 21 first-discipline doctorate programs, 124 second-discipline doctorate programs and at the same time 1 professional doctorate, 19 professional master’s degrees as well as 24 postdoctoral research stations. It also has 14 national high-quality courses, 14 national characteristic specialties, 210 national college student innovation entrepreneurship training programs, 5 national teaching masters and 2 national bilingual exemplary teaching courses. In addition, the university has 2 National Key Disciplines, and 214 provincial key disciplines, 4 disciplines (or fields) in top 1% of ESI ranking in the world.

Featured with a solid scientific research foundation, Zhengzhou University now owns more than 330 scientific research institutions of all levels/kinds, among which are 1 National Engineering Research Center, 1 National Technology Research Promotion Center, 1 National Chemical Safety Engineering Technology Center, 1 National Research Center for Safety Evaluation of Drugs, 3 MOE Key Labs, 2 MOE Engineering Research Center, 1 Key Research Base of College Humanities and Social Sciences sponsored by the MOE and the Province, 1 Sports Culture Research Base under the Sports Culture Development Research Center of the State Sports General Administration, 1 National Intellectual Property Training Base, 6 Henan Provincial Collaborative Innovation Centers; Provincial Key Labs, Engineering Technology Research Centers, International United Labs, Key Humanities and Social Science Research Bases, Provincial Universities and Colleges Key Principles Open Labs, Engineering Technology Research Centers, State Key Laboratory Cultivation Bases total up to 104, and provincial key scientific and research institutions total up to 125, which indicates a strong capability on basic research, application research and development of science and technology.

(4). Great achievements 

Since 2003, the number of the country’s major, key projects and the National Natural Science Fund and other projects that undertaken by Zhengzhou University has grown rapidly. In the past four years, Zhengzhou University has undertaken more than 2000 scientific research projects at all levels. Among these projects, more than 200 items are of national level, 117 items are newly established projects of National Natural Science Fund, including one major project, one key project and 600 provincial key projects. A number of major scientific research projects have an important impact at home and abroad.

Since 2003, Zhengzhou University outputs more than 8000 achievements in scientific research (including papers, books), among which 1163 articles are retrieved by EI, SCI. the number of papers included by SCI in 2005 ranked top 35 among universities and colleges in China, the number of papers included by EI ranked top 50 among colleges and universities in China. 136 items won the second or above prize of scientific and technological progress awards of provincial level. The project “Key mechanical problems and calculation method of mould design in rubber products” presided over and completed by Professor Shen Changyu, and the project “The new exchange shell-and-tube heat equipment research and application of modern design technology” presided over and completed by Professor Liu Minshan and Dong Qiwu won the second prize of national scientific and technological progress awards; the project “Twelve carbon dicarboxylic acid synthesis of nylon 1212 industrial production and research” presided over and completed by Professor Zhao Qingxiang won a DuPont Award for science and technology innovation. Besides, Zhengzhou University applied 100 patents, of which 61 were patents of invention.

International education of Zhengzhou University started in 1984, Zhengzhou University is one of the earliest universities that accept international students in China. It is the only one among colleges and universities of Henan province to accept the Chinese government scholarship to foreign students. 

At present, there are approximately 1,600 overseas students from 60 countries or areas studying in Zhengzhou University. The graduates of Zhengzhou University have made important contributions to the development of their home countries.

The School of International Education (SIE) is in charge of every aspect of international students at Zhengzhou University. The School of International Education offers English instructed undergraduate and postgraduate programs to international students, and it has carried out in-depth exchange and cooperation with world renowned institutions in various aspects; it will further strengthen its cooperation with overseas educational institutions by establishing vigorous platforms for future achievements.

There are several canteens in Zhengzhou University. Songyang Canteen is located in Songyuan. It is very convenient for international students to have meals there. There is a cafeteria of hot pot, and international students also have access to Muslim canteen. 1. I really want to study at your University, but I can’t speak Chinese, can I be instructed in English?

Answer: The program is fully English medium program.

2. How is the living standard in Zhengzhou city? What about the canteens in the University?

Answer: The living expense here is medium, for example, approximately 150USD for your meals per month. Zhengzhou University canteens are equipped with air conditioners and TV sets and provide various flavors of cuisines and snacks, including rice and cooked wheaten food. There is also a cafeteria of hot pot. International students have access to Muslim canteen.

3. How can I arrive in Zhengzhou city, the location of University?

Answer: If there is no direct flight to Zhengzhou, the recommended flight is transit from Beijing to Zhengzhou (around 1 hour and 45 minutes), or transit from Shanghai to Zhengzhou (around 2 hours), or transit from Guangzhou to Zhengzhou (around 2 hours and 20 minutes), or transit from Hongkong to Zhengzhou (around 2.5 hours). International students can choose the travel route according to their location.

4. Can you send a vehicle to take us from the local airport to the University?

Answer: Sure, we can provide airport pick up service for the international students in group from the local airport – Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport to the campus. Students should send detailed departure schedule to us minimum 3 days in advance so that the university can pick up without any delay.

5. How can I exchange some Chinese currency for my pocket money when I just arrived in China?

Answer: Students can exchange some Chinese currency in bank for shuttle/bus ticket fare and pocket money in big airport when they arrive in China. And students can buy telephone card from business counter in the airport to give international call and domestic call if students need.

6. How are the transportation, telecom and internet in Zhengzhou City?

Answer: there is one airport, two train stations and many buses to many cities in China. There are convenient public facilities for telecom and internet, you can buy telecom card to call in any time and there are lots of internet pub for going on internet.

7. How is the climate in Zhengzhou City?

Answer: Zhengzhou experiences a monsoon-influenced, four-season humid subtropical climate, with cold, dry winters and hot, humid summers. Spring and autumn are dry and somewhat abbreviated transition periods. The city has an annual average temperature of 14.4 °C (57.9 °F), with monthly daily mean temperatures ranging from 0.1 °C (32.2 °F) in January to 27.0 °C (80.6 °F) in July. Diversified weather brings rich and beautiful landscapes and the abundance of wildlife.

Answer: Yes, a student could open a bank account in his name to keep his surplus money safe. He could also use this account to have his family remit any additional money as required.

9. Is learning Chinese language compulsory?

Answer: Even though the program is instructed in English, but international students must study Chinese language according to Ministry of Education, China. Chinese language classes are just offered in the first two years, three times per week, and international students are required to pass the basic level. Besides, it will be helpful for students in daily life if they learn some Chinese language.
