Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) is a multi-disciplinary university that encompasses in the areas such as engineering, management, economics, law, liberal arts, and science, with a special emphasis on shipping technology, economics and management. Chinese maritime education originated at Shanghai and grew out of the Shipping Section of Shanghai Industrial College founded in 1909 (towards the end of the Qing Dynasty). SMU was established by the Ministry of Communications in 1959. According to the university layout adjustment in Shanghai, and for better service of construction of Shanghai international shipping center, Lingang new campus inaugurated in 2008.

(1) History 

Shanghai Maritime University was established by the Ministry of Communications in 1959. China's maritime higher education started in Shanghai. Early in 1909 in the late Qing Dynasty, the Shipping Section of the Shanghai Industrial College under the Ministry of Post and Communications was launched, signaling the inception of tertiary maritime education. In 1912 Wosong Merchant Marine School was established; it was renamed Wosong Merchant Marine College in 1928. Then in 1959 the Ministry of Transport farmer Ministry of Communications at created Shanghai Maritime University. Since 2000, SMU has been jointly run by Shanghai Municipality and the Ministry of Transport, with the former as the main administrative organ. Recently, 2008 the Lingang new campus was Inaugurated. 

(2) Discipline and programs

At present, Shanghai Maritime University runs 2 post-doctoral research stations, 19 doctoral programs, 78 master’s degree programs, 45 bachelor’s degree programs, and 10 associate degree programs. SMU presently consists of Merchant Marine College, College of Transport and Communications, School of Economics & Management, College of Logistics Engineering (Sino-Dutch Mechanical and Electronic Engineering College), Law School, College of Information Engineering, College of Foreign Languages, College of Ocean Science and Engineering, College of Arts and Sciences. SMU takes special emphasis on shipping technology, economics and management, Maritime engineering among other several disciplines. The university is one of the best Chinese universities for specialization in maritime, shipping and transport education.

(3) Academic facilities and Scientific research 

Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) boasts 10 provincial and municipal key research institutes and laboratories, 1 state-level key discipline, 5 state-level specialties with special features, 9 ministerial or municipal key disciplines, and 17 Shanghai municipal “educational heights”. SMU owns an aquatic training center, the Yufeng Ship, a 10-thousand-ton container ship for teaching and internship training, and a newly-built 48-thousand-ton Yangtze handymax bulk carrier for teaching and internship training ship, named Yuming ship. In 2007, SMU library removed to Shanghai Lingang New City. Up to now, the Library holds under its roof a collection of more than 5.5 million books, 2,265 kinds of domestic and foreign newspapers and periodicals, 20 Reading rooms and 2800 Reading Seats. The library also has a massive acquisition of digital resources from the library and abroad, amounting to 360 retrieve computers, 48 digital resource platforms, and 156 databases.

(4) Shanghai Maritime University Achievement

In the MOE evaluation of undergraduate education in 2004, SMU was awarded an “A” (Excellent). Then in 2006 the SMU English-language specialty won another “A” in the MOE assessment. The university has won multiple awards for research including national awards for science and technology projects and awards for scientific and technological progress above the municipal and ministerial level in 2013. Over the past decades the university has produced specialists of various types at various levels for the country’s shipping industry. The graduated students are employed in shipping companies, port enterprises and government institutions. Deservedly, SMU has been honored as a “cradle of international shipping specialists”.

(5) Communication and international cooperation

Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) has always attached much importance to exchange and cooperation with overseas academies, institutions and industry companies, and has established close ties with over 70 institutions in aspects of teacher communication, joint school-running, scientific research cooperation, students exchange, etc, and close contacts with international noted shipping organization/institution, (e.g.) International Maritime Organization, The Baltic and International Maritime Council, Classification society in Norway. SMU has opened up “international class”, which attracts students of maritime institutions in USA, Korea, Poland, Russia, German, Ukraine, etc. Approved by the Education Ministry of China in 2011, the Bachelor of Science program in Logistics Management, offered by Shanghai Maritime University in collaboration with Regional Maritime University is open to applicants from Central and West Africa, which is the pioneering overseas program that can be awarded Chinese bachelor's degree among Shanghai universities. Since 2012, SMU is approved to accept the Chinese Government Scholarship students, which will be more conducive to promoting the process of internationalization of SMU.

At Shanghai Maritime University, international students are accommodated in international students dormitory Building 62 (new campus) and Gaoheng Mansion (old campus). It is under the management of the International Education College. Students are also allowed to rent off-campus, however, the costs of on-campus housing is more affordable. Each room is equipped with a bath, a direct-dial telephone, air-conditioner and Internet connection. International students should pay the bill of ultra-generated water and electricity individually. The accommodation fees of the dormitories are paid per semester and will not be refunded if you leave before the end of the semester.

For decades, Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) has been devoted to fostering qualified talents for shipping industry. SMU has provided the world famous shipping enterprises, public institutions the world and government departments with over 40,000 graduates. The International Education College (IEC) is a special administrative and teaching institute responsible for the enrollment and administration of all international students, consisting of the Office of IEC and the Center for Chinese Studies (CCS), which is located in Dongming Campus with the administrative office and Teaching and Research Department. In 2012, there are more than 600 international students from 40 countries or regions across the world, including about 100 degree students and more than 500 students in long-term and short-term non-degree programs. 

Shanghai Maritime University has comprehensive dining halls that serve standard Chinese cafeteria food.  There are three dining halls on Lingang campus, all the dining halls except A5 have one day off on Saturday or Sunday. The working-hour notice can be found on the entrance of each dining hall.

Hai’xin Dining Halls: in the north living plaza, including A1, A2, A3, A4, A5 (for Muslim), and The A4 dining provides midnight snacks from 19:00 to 21:00;

 Hai’qin Dining Halls: in the south living plaza, including B1, B2, and B3

Hai’lian dining halls: near the sixth gate, including C1,C2, and C3

International students can apply for a dining card during registration period, Students may have meals in any students’ dining hall with this card and it can also be used in shops and the library and so on. Students are expected to maintain the order of the dining halls, help to keep the places clean and tidy and respect the working staff.

1. I really want to study at your University, but I can’t speak Chinese, can I be instructed in English?

Answer: The program is fully English medium program. 

2. How is the living standard in Shanghai city? What about the canteen in the University?

Answer: The living standard here is superior, for example, reference costs 200 USD per month for food. There is a special canteen for international students and a separate food court for Muslim students.

3. How can I arrive in Shanghai city, the location of University?

Answer: There are many direct flights from the entire world to Shanghai.

4. Can you send a vehicle to take us from the local airport to the University?

Answer: the university can provide airport pick up service for the students in group from Shanghai PudongInternational Airport or from Shanghai Hongqiao International airport to campus. But students should send detailed departure schedule to our university’s representative minimum 3 days in advance so that we can pick up without any delay. Airport Pick-up Service is only available on duty hours in Registration time.

5. How can I exchange some Chinese currency for my pocket money when I just arrived in China?

Answer: Students can exchange some Chinese currency in bank for shuttle/bus ticket fare and pocket money at Pudong International Airport (PVG) or Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA) when they arrive in China. And students can buy telephone card from business counter in the airport to give international call and domestic call if students need. 

6. How are the transportation, telecom and internet in Shanghai City? 

Answer: there are two International airports in shanghai city one is Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) the second is Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA), train stations and subway. There are convenient public facilities for telecom and internet, you can buy telecom card to call any time and there are lots of public internet club

7. How is the climate in Shanghai City?

Answer: Shanghai has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons: pleasant spring, hot rainy summer, comfortable cool autumn and cold winter. Annual average temperature is 16.1 °C (61.0 °F). Rainy days reach 120 days of the year because of its location at the estuary of the Yangtze River to the East China Sea.

Answer: China is the largest producer of engineering graduates in the world.

Answer: China has become the second largest economic entity, which has made China an influential role in the global economy.

10. Can a student open a Bank Account? 

Answer: Yes, a student could open a bank account in his name to keep his surplus money safe. He could also use this account to have his family remit any additional money as required.

11. Is learning Chinese language compulsory? 

Answer: Even though the program is taught in English, but international students must study Chinese language according to Ministry of Education, China. Chinese language classes are just offered three times per week, and international students are required to pass the basic level. Besides, it will be helpful for students in daily life if they learn some Chinese language
