Nantong University is a comprehensive university with a history of 100 years. It provides a complete range of disciplines including literature, science, engineering, medicine, pedagogy, economics, law, history, and administration. (1) History

Nantong University was established in 1912. On May18, 2004 with the amalgamation of Nantong Medical College, Nantong Institute of Technology and Nantong Teachers College, and the new Nantong University was established. Nantong Medical College, stemmed from a private Medical Institute of Nantong, was founded in 1912 by Zhang Jian and his brother Zhang Cha. It was one of the earliest medical colleges in China. Nantong Institute of Technology, the first textile college in China, developed from Nantong Textile Training School set in 1912. Nantong Teachers College was amalgamated from the former Nantong Teachers College and Nantong Education College in 1999.

(2) Discipline and programs

Nantong University provides a complete range of disciplines including literature, science, engineering, medicine, pedagogy, economics, law, history, and administration. It is composed of twenty-five schools, having in all 99 undergraduate programs, 117 master’s programs and 25 doctoral degree programs. The university is honored with the national key disciplines, provincial key disciplines, provincial key constructing disciplines, provincial service platform for public technology, provincial engineering center, provincial key medical discipline etc. The university presently has more than 35,000 full-time students, including around 2000 students studying for Doctor’s degree and Master’s degree and more than 400 international students.

(3) Academic facilities and scientific research 

Nantong University now has around 2,200 full-time teachers, including more than 1486 professors and associate professors. The Library of Nantong University covers about 47300m2 and has a collection of over 0.936 million. Nantong University has one provincial key laboratories Cultivate construction station of the National Key Laboratory of higher education and Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education, 3 provincial key laboratories, and 2 provincial public technical service platforms. Also, Nantong University has 2 provincial engineering centers, 1 collaborative innovation center of University in Jiangsu and 2 key research bases of philosophy and Social Sciences in Colleges and Universities in Jiangsu. 

(4) Great achievements

Nantong University undertakes hundreds of research items under projects including National 973 Project, 863 Project, National Science Research Fund Project and Social Science Fund. There are one item of National Science and technology major projects, and more than 350 items National Fund for natural science and Social Science. Nantong University won more than 140 items of awards of patents for invention, and many items of awards of National Technological Invention, Chinese medical achievement, National College of Science Research Excellence Award and many other different awards. There are more than 5600 academic papers were published In SCI, EI, ISTP, CSSCI and other journals at Nantong University.

(5) Communication and international cooperation

Nantong University is expanding its international academic exchange and cooperation, like faculty and student exchange programs, research cooperation programs, joint education programs and other programs, with more than 50 universities and research institutes in Britain, the USA, Germany, Canada, Australia, Japan and Korea. Each year, there are 20 foreign experts working in the university.

School of International Education (SIE), Nantong University was established in 2010 January in full charge of international students. At present, there are 400 overseas students in Nantong University. International students enjoy the good learning environment and colorful life in Nantong University, which also enriches the campus culture and promotes the communication and cooperation between China and foreign countries.

There are two canteens in the campus of Nantong University, one in the west gate and the other in the east. A Muslim canteen has been specially set up for Muslim students. Delicious Chinese food with low price appeals international students and the environment is also good.

There is a Gourmet Festival annually held in Nantong University, during the festival, students enjoy various cuisines and snacks.

1. I really want to study at your University, but I can’t speak Chinese, can I be instructed in English?
 
Answer: The program is fully English medium program.
 
2. How is the living standard in Nantong city? What about the canteen in the University?
 
Answer: The living expense here is relatively low; the reference cost is 100 USD per month. There are some canteens and one Muslim canteen available to international students. 
 
3. How can I arrive in Nantong city, the location of University?
 
Answer: If there is no direct flight to Nantong, the recommended way is flying to Shanghai first and then taking a bus from Shanghai to Nantong (around 2.5 hours), or transit by air from Beijing to Nantong (around 2 hours and 5 minutes), or transit from Guangzhou to Nantong (around 2 hours and 5 minutes). Students can choose the travel route according to their location.
 
4. Can you send a vehicle to take us from the local airport to the University?
 
Answer: Sure, we can provide airport pick up service for the international students in group from the local airport – Nantong Xingdong International Airport to campus. But students should send detailed departure schedule to the college’s representative minimum 3 days in advance so that the university can pick up without any delay.
 
5. How can I exchange some Chinese currency for my pocket money when I just arrived in China?
 
Answer: Students can exchange some Chinese currency in bank for shuttle/bus ticket fare and pocket money in the big international airport when they arrive in China. And students can buy telephone card from business counter in the airport to give international call and domestic call if students need.
 
6. How are the transportation, telecom and internet settled in Nantong City?
 
Answer: There is one airport, four train stations and many buses to many cities in China. Nantong is close to Shanghai, only 2.5 hours. There are convenient public facilities for telecom and internet, you can buy telecom card to call in any time and there are lots of internet pub for going on internet.
 
7. How is the climate in Nantong City?
 
Answer: Nantong has a humid subtropical climate, with four distinct seasons. Monthly daily average temperatures range from 3.1 °C (37.6 °F) in January to 27.2 °C (81.0 °F) in July, and the annual mean is 15.33 °C (59.6 °F). With the plum rains in June and early July comes the rainiest part of the year.

Answer: Even though the program is taught in English, but international students must study Chinese language according to Ministry of Education, China. Chinese language classes are just offered three times per week, and international students are required to pass the basic level. Besides, it will be helpful for students in daily life if they learn some Chinese language.
