Shandong University of Technology was established in 1956 in Zibo, one of China’s most historic cities and the cradle of the ancient Qi Culture.  The University is renowned for its science and engineering with the prioritized support from Shandong Province. As one of the National Pilot Zones for Innovative Talents Training Mode program, SDUT is among the first group of pilot schools for “A Plan for Educating and Training Outstanding Engineers” of national level and one of the pilot universities for the College English Teaching Reform in China. The University also serves as one of the training institutes for the National College Students Know about Business (KAB) Entrepreneurship Program and the National Information-based Education Program. Now SDUT has been entitled as “the Distinctive University in Training Applied Talents” by Shandong Province.

1. History

Established in 1956, Shandong University of Technology (SDUT) is one of the key comprehensive universities in Shandong Province, with an academic focus on Science and Engineering. SDUT is located in Zibo which was once the capital city of the Qi State, the most powerful state during the Spring and Autumn period and the Warring States period (about 2000 years ago) in China. The campus covers an area of 240 hectares and combines a pleasant locale with convenient transportation. It is only 1.5 hours from Qingdao by high-speed rail, and about 2.5 hours’ drive from Qufu, Confucius’ hometown. Currently, SDUT has 22 academic schools, with a total enrollment of 32,200 full-time undergraduates and over 2,600 graduates.

2. Discipline and Programs

Shandong University of Technology boosts itself with a wide coverage of nine major disciplines – engineering, science, economics, management, literature, law, history, pedagogy and arts. There are 75 undergraduate programs, 140 graduate programs, and 16 doctoral programs offered by the university, among which quite a lot enjoys a nationwide and international fame, such as Chinese Language and Literature, International Economy and Trade, Finance, Accounting, Mechanical Manufacturing and Automation, Vehicle Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Automation, Energy and Power Engineering and Civil Engineering. SDUT offers the Bachelor’s Degree of International Business and Trade (International Logistics) in English special for the international students.

3. Academic Facilities and Scientific Research

Shandong University of Technology has abundant educational resources and well-equipped facilities. The University covers an area of 240 hectares or 3,600 mu. The quiet surroundings, flourishing trees and flowers and the green carpet of grass create pleasant scenery, presenting the beauty of harmony between human and nature. With a floor space of 1.05 million square meters, the University has a total sports area of 164, 000 square meters, 268 multi-media lecture halls and well-equipped teaching facilities for physical education. The library contains a collection of 6.11 million volumes of books (of which 3.05 million volumes are electronic) and 24,000 types of journals in both Chinese and foreign languages (including electrical journals).

Shandong University of Technology has 21 laboratories co-built by the central and the local governments, 4 national engineering practice centers, 1 national model center for experiment teaching, 1 national virtual simulation experiment teaching center, 2 Shandong provincial model centers for experiment teaching and 13 Shandong provincial experiment teaching centers for key disciplines. SDUT also is one of the national key training institutes for the vocational faculty. The advanced campus network links the whole campus and there are public service platforms such as the Education Technology Center and the Center for Analysis and Test.

Shandong University of Technology (SDUT) undertakes a number of high-level research projects and solves technological problems for enterprises and related industries by integrated development and collaborative innovation with the local areas. A lot of symbolic scientific research achievements have been made and it has become an essential part of regional innovation system. Since 2003, Shandong University of Technology has been awarded 27 teaching achievement prizes of provincial or above level, among which 2 are second prizes of national level. 2 teams are entitled as the national level teaching teams and 7 as provincial level teaching teams. 5 disciplines are selected as the national level programs with special features, and 14 as provincial level brand-name programs or provincial level programs with special features. 5 courses are awarded the national level quality courses while 1 course is a national level bilingual model course and 52 courses are provincial level quality courses. SDUT has won about 144 scientific research awards of provincial or above levels, among which 2 are second prizes of National Award for Technological Invention in 2006 and 2007, and 5 are second prizes of National Award for Progress in Science and Technology in 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, and 2013.

SDUT has improved the practical and innovative abilities of the students. This has led to the winning of almost 4,300 prizes in various kinds of important events, such as the Challenge Cup Contest for the National College Students’ Extracurricular Academic Science &Technology Works, the National Contest of Mathematics Models, etc. Of them, 82 are international awards, 19 national grand awards and 244 national first prizes. 

5. Communication and International Cooperation

Shandong University of Technology (SDUT) has established friendly cooperative relationships with more than 60 universities in 17 countries. SDUT works extensively on joint programs, student and faculty exchange, scientific research, and international workshops and conferences. So far, SDUT has developed 7 joint programs with the Republic of Ireland, South Korea, the USA, the UK and other countries. SDUT has also carried out undergraduate student exchange programs on “2 + 2” and “3 + 1” models with many well-known overseas universities. In recent years, more than 2,800 international students have studied with us. They come from over 20 countries including South Korea, Russia, the United States, Saudi Arabia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan.

Shandong University of Technology has three accommodation buildings for foreign students only on campus. The first one is situated near the East gate of campus. It is equipped with a kitchen, living room and utility room both on the first and fourth floor. The bedrooms are in good sizes and each has an en-suite. Students usually share a room but each student has their own wardrobe and desk.

The second accommodation building is located near the North gate and also has 2 kitchens, a living room and a utility room. The third building is also situated near the North gate. Students are only permitted to cook in the kitchen and not in their bedrooms.

To use the washing machine, you are required to purchase a laundry card. All the international student accommodation buildings have free WIFI connection however if you would like to have your own wifi router, you can purchase one.

Shandong University of Technology (SDUT) is accredited to enroll international students, who may choose to study undergraduate degree program taught in English. The University explores the channels of cooperation with overseas partners to push forward the process of internationalization and has initiated 6 joint education programs with institutions of several countries. SDUT vigorously develops international education and more than 3,300 international students have received education in the University.

Shandong University of Technology has four large canteens on campus to cater for all students. Each canteen has at least two floors and offers an extremely wide variety of food. The third canteen has a Muslim Restaurant and the fourth dining hall is a Korean restaurant. There are also many little market stalls scattered around campus selling hot food and snacks.

Outside of campus there are plenty of restaurants to choose from selling delicious food at great prices. Out of the north gate you will find a great outdoor street food market and BBQ place.

1. I really want to study at your University, but I can’t speak Chinese, can I be instructed in English?

Answer: The program is fully English medium program.

2. How is the living standard in Zibo city? What about the canteen in the University?

Answer: The reference living lost is around 100 USD per month for food cost. Shandong University of Technology has four large canteens on campus to cater for all students. Each canteen offers an extremely wide variety of food. Outside of campus there are plenty of restaurants to choose from selling delicious food at great prices.

3. How can I arrive in Zibo city, the location of University?

Answer: Zibo does not have its own airport. Students must travel to neighboring Jinan Yaoqiang International Airport, or Qingdao Liuting International Airport. If there is no direct flight to Jinan, the recommended flight is transit from Hong Kong to Jinan (around 2 hours), transit from Beijing to Jinan (around 1.5 hours), or transit from Shanghai to Jinan (around 1.5 hours), or transit from Guangzhou to Jinan (around 2.6 hours). Students can choose the travel route according to their location.

4. Can you send a vehicle to take us from the local airport to the University?

Answer: Zibo does not have its own airport. Students must travel to neighboring Jinan Yaoqiang International Airport, or Qingdao Liuting International Airport, to take planes. Shandong University of Technology does not provide airport pick up service for international students at present.

5. How can I exchange some Chinese currency for my pocket money when I just arrived in China?

Answer: Students can exchange some Chinese currency in bank for shuttle/bus ticket fare and pocket money at the big International Airport when they arrive in China. And students can buy telephone card from business counter in the airport to give international call and domestic call if students need.

6. How are the transportation, telecom and internet in Zibo City? 

Answer: As an important traffic hub of Shandong province, Zibo enjoys convenient transportation. There are two train stations (one is under construction) and one bus station in Zibo to most major cities in China. There are convenient public facilities for telecom and internet, you can buy telecom card to call in any time and there are lots of internet pub for going on internet.

7. How is the climate in Zibo City?

Answer: Zibo is located in a warm, temperate zone, and bears a semi-humid and semi-dry continental climate. Like other major cities in North China, Zibo has four distinct seasons. January and July are, respectively, the coldest and hottest months during the year. The average annual temperature is 13.4°C (56.1°F). Zibo enjoys 180 to 220 frost-free days and the annual average precipitation of Zibo is 25.2 inches (640.5 mm).

8. Can a student open a Bank Account? 

Answer: Yes, a student could open a bank account in his name to keep his surplus money safe. He could also use this account to have his family remit any additional money as required.

9. How is China’s Engineering Education in the world?

Answer: China is the largest producer of engineering graduates in the world.

10. How is China’s Business and Management Education in the world?

Answer: China has become the second largest economic entity, which has made China an influential role in the global economy.

11. Is learning Chinese language compulsory? 

Answer: Even though the program is taught in English, but international students must study Chinese language according to Ministry of Education, China. Chinese language classes are just offered three times per week, and international students are required to pass the basic level. Besides, it will be helpful for students in daily life if they learn some Chinese language.
