It is jointly supported by the Gansu Provincial Government and the Ministry of Education of China, making it one of the region's most important higher education institutions.
The university traces its origins back to 1919, when it was first founded as the Gansu Provincial Technical School. Over the past century, LUT has grown into a comprehensive university with a focus on engineering, complemented by programs in science, management, economics, literature, law, and arts. It officially adopted its current name in 2003 to reflect its commitment to innovation, research, and practical application.
LUT is known for excellence in mechanical engineering, materials science, civil engineering, energy, and environmental engineering. It houses numerous key laboratories at the national and provincial levels and emphasizes applied research that advances China’s industrial and technological progress.
The university’s international presence is demonstrated through partnerships with over 90 universities and research institutions worldwide. It welcomes students from many countries via exchange programs, scholarships, and courses taught in English. LUT also offers the President Scholarship, which supports high-achieving international students by covering tuition, accommodations, and living expenses.

Admission Process
First, prospective students must verify their eligibility for the desired program. This includes being a citizen of a country other than the People’s Republic of China, being in good physical and mental health, and having the necessary previous educational credentials. For undergraduate programs, this generally means a high school diploma and meeting age requirements; for master’s and doctoral programs, you must hold the relevant prior degree. Language proficiency is also necessary—if the program is taught in Chinese, an HSK certificate may be required; for English-medium options, IELTS or TOEFL might be needed.
Once eligibility is confirmed, the next major step is to prepare the required documents. Applicants typically need to complete the official application form, submit a copy of their passport, provide academic transcripts and the highest diploma, offer proof of language ability, submit a physical examination report, and often include a non-criminal record certificate. Graduate applicants may also need letters of recommendation and a study plan or research proposal.
After preparing the documents, you submit the application online via LUT’s international student portal or the designated application platform. Be sure to pay any required application fee (for example, many self-funded applicants must pay a non-refundable fee), and submit your application before the published deadline.
Following submission, the university reviews your application materials, which may include an online interview for certain degree programs. Applicants then wait for notification of the admission decision. Once accepted, you will receive an official Admission Notice and the visa-related form (such as the JW201/JW202) necessary for applying for the appropriate Chinese student visa (usually the X1 visa for long-term study).
Finally, with your visa approved, admitted students travel to China before the semester begins, arrive at LUT, complete registration with the International Education Office, submit verified original documents, arrange accommodation, and pay any remaining tuition or fees. This wraps up your admission process and transitions you into student life at LUT.
