About

History

Jiangsu University (JSU) was founded in 1902, sharing the exact origin with Nanjing University, Southeast University, etc. It is a national comprehensive key university under the joint support and instruction of China’s Ministry of Education, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and Jiangsu Provincial Government.

Location

JSU is located in Zhenjiang, a well-known, beautiful, and historic city on the south bank of the Yangtze River. It is also where the Yangtze River cuts across the Grand Canal of China.

JSU has three campuses: The main campus, the Beigu campus, and a second-level college: Jingjiang College.

Ranking

China has more than 2600 registered and accredited higher education institutions. According to the latest ESI Ranking, JSU improved its ranking from 65 in 2016 to 40 in 2024 among China’s Universities.

In the Times Higher Education World University Ranking (2025), JSU comes out 36th out of all universities in the Chinese mainland, and in the QS Asian University Ranking (2024), JSU is ranked 32nd in the Chinese mainland.

Staff & Students

JSU employs more than 2,700 academics, with over 40% of academics who have spent more than one year at an international university. It has over 40,000 students, including over 13,000 postgraduates and 2,300 international students for degree education.

Programs

JSU has 34 teaching facilities and offers 97 undergraduate programs, 15 doctoral programs of the first-level discipline, 45 master’s programs of the first-level discipline, as well as professional master's programs of 21 categories. These programs are offered in the following 11 academic disciplines: Engineering, Agriculture, Science, Medicine, Management, Economics, Philosophy, Law, Education, Literature, and Art. The University also houses 14 postdoctoral research stations.

Disciplines

Faculties at JSU offer 15 doctoral academic disciplines (fields of recognized expertise) encompassing 45 subjects (majors). We currently house two national key academic disciplines and one national academic key discipline (under construction). In addition, JSU boasts 15 advanced academic disciplines ranked by ESI in the top 1% globally. They are Engineering, Materials Science, Clinical Medicine, Chemistry, Agricultural Science, Pharmacology & Toxicology, Biology & Biochemistry, Environmental Ecology, Molecular Biology & Genetics, Computer Science, Botany & Animal Sciences, General Social Sciences, Physics, Immunology and Microbiology. Among them, Engineering, Chemistry, Agricultural Science, and Materials Science are ranked in the top 1‰ globally.

Research and Social Service

JSU actively promotes high-level research and social service. In its 13th Five-Year Plan period, the University won 847 projects from the National Natural Science Foundation, placing it among the top 50 universities in China for six consecutive years. So far, the University has won 16 scientific and technological achievement awards at the national level, 3 scientific and technological innovation awards sponsored by the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation, and 6 projects supported by the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. In addition, the University houses the National Research Center of Pumps and Pumping System Engineering and Technology.

International Collaboration

JSU prioritizes internationalization by actively encouraging faculty members and students to further their studies abroad, inviting international talents to join us, ensuring mutual academic benefits for both parties, promoting international research collaboration, and recruiting talented overseas students.

Internationalization is one of the important development strategies of Jiangsu University. JSU has set up cooperation partnerships with 247 universities in 65 countries, including the USA, France, Japan, Italy, the UK, etc. Our school is the first chair and permanent secretariat unit of the Jiangsu-UK World-class University Consortium. We’ve established a joint education institute, i.e. The Jiangsu University Cranfield Tech Futures Graduate Institute. JSU also has several international scientific research platforms, such as the International Joint Research Center for Health Management on Key Structure of High-End Equipment, the International Cooperative Research Center for Fluid Engineering Equipment Energy-Saving Technology, the World Food Preservation Research Center, and the Innovation and Introduction Base of high-end fluid Machinery Equipment and Technology disciplines. JSU has been approved to set up the United Nations Industrial Development Organization's Global Agricultural Modernization and Food Safety Education and Training Center.

JSU attaches great importance to international multilateral cooperation and has initiated many global alliances to promote study and research. JSU is the first "Rotating Chair and Permanent Secretariat” of the Jiangsu side of the Jiangsu-UK World-Class University Consortium and the Chair of the International University Consortium for Agricultural Engineering.

Accommodation

Jiangsu University provides campus accommodation for all international students. Except for special circumstances, it is not allowed to live off-campus. Please do not rent an apartment off-campus before the approval from Overseas Education College. If the student rents an apartment off-campus without the approval, the economic losses caused shall be borne by the student himself or herself. All campus accommodations are double rooms, and single rooms are generally not provided. The room is equipped with an independent toilet, air conditioner, water heater, air conditioner, and other facilities. There are kitchens and activity rooms in the dorm building.

 

Accommodation Fee: CNY4500 / bed/year (North), CNY4900 / bed/year (South), or CNY30 / bed/day. The first year of the doctoral president's scholarship includes accommodation expenses. From the second year, the scholarship will be based on annual evaluation results.

 

On-Campus Accommodation

PS: The University does not permit freshmen to live off-campus.

Admission Process

For Bachelor's Degree, International Foundation Programs(undergraduate)

1. Eligibility and Requirements:

  • Non-Chinese citizens who are physically and mentally healthy, possess a strong academic background, willing to comply with Chinese laws and university regulations, and respect the customs and habits of the Chinese people are eligible to apply.

  • Applicants should have completed high school or possess equivalent qualifications. They must hold a valid passport. 18 to 25 years old. Applicants under 18 years of age should provide a guarantee from a guardian. Applicants who were previously Chinese citizens and have subsequently acquired foreign nationality shall meet the requirements in the relevant regulations of China's Ministry of Education

2. Application Documents:

  • Passport: A scanned copy of the passport's main page (valid until after September 30, 2025).

  • High School Diploma: The original or notarized copy of the high school diploma. Current high school graduates should provide a pre-graduation certificate issued by their schools (graduation date should be before February 28, 2025). Upon registration, the official high school diploma must be submitted.

  • High School Transcripts: The original or notarized copy of all high school course transcripts.

  • English Proficiency (For English-Taught Programs): Applicants for programs taught in English must provide copies of their IELTS, TOEFL, or Duolingo English Test scores. IELTS scores should be above 5.5, TOEFL scores above 80, and Duolingo scores above 85.

  • Personal Statement: A self-statement of intent for studying in China (no less than 800 words), written in either Chinese or English.

  • Foreigner Physical Examination Form: Applicants must undergo a medical examination following the items listed in the form. The examination results are valid for 6 months.

  • Financial Statement: Either the family deposit certificate, property certificate, or parent/guardian income certificate with a recommended minimum value of USD 5,000 or equivalent.

  • Non-criminal Record within 6 months.

For a Master's Degree, Ph.D. Degree, and Senior Researchers

1. Eligibility and Requirements: 

  • Non-Chinese citizens who are physically and mentally healthy, possess a strong academic background, willing to comply with Chinese laws and university regulations, and respect the customs and habits of the Chinese people are eligible to apply.

  • Master: Applicants should hold a bachelor's degree or its equivalent. Principally, an applicant's age should not exceed 30 years old.

  • Ph.D.: Applicants should hold a master's degree or its equivalent. Principally, an applicant's age should not exceed 40 years old.

2. Application Documents:

  • Passport: A scanned copy of the passport's main page (valid until after September 30, 2025)

  • Original or Notarized Degree Certificates: Original or notarized copies of all degree certificates starting from the undergraduate level. Current graduates should provide a pre-graduation certificate issued by their universities (graduation date should be before February 28, 2025). The original degree certificates must be submitted upon registration.

  • Original or Notarized Transcripts: Transcripts for all courses taken starting from the undergraduate level.

  • CV: Include a chronological list of educational experiences from the undergraduate level onward. Applicants with previous educational experiences in China should include all study experiences.

  • Study Plan: At least 800 words, include details about applicants' educational and work background, academic achievements, research plans, and personal development goals. Ph.D. applicants should also provide a detailed academic research plan.

  • Language Proficiency Proof: Applicants from non-English speaking countries should provide scanned copies of TOEFL, IELTS, GRE scores, or other documents proving their English proficiency.

  • Two Recommendation Letters: Either Chinese or English and signed by associate professors or professors in a relevant field.

  • Foreigner Physical Examination Form: Applicants must undergo a medical examination following the items listed in the form. The examination results are valid for 6 months.

  • Financial Statement: Either the family deposit certificate, property certificate, or parent/guardian income certificate with a recommended minimum value of $5,000 or equivalent.

  • Non-criminal Record within 6 months.

  • List and Abstracts of Published Academic Papers.

Culture and Practice-One Year Program and One Semester Program

 

1. Eligibility and Requirements:

  • Non-Chinese nationals; 

  • Friendly towards China, with no criminal record, and abide by the laws, regulations, and rules of the Chinese government and the university; 

  • Physically and mentally healthy, with excellent conduct and academic performance; 

  • Aged between 18-45 years old.

2. Application Documents:

  • Passport: A scanned copy of the passport's main page (valid until after September 30, 2025). Applicants with previous experiences in China should provide scans of all documents related to Chinese visas and residence permits.

  • The Officially Certified Certificates of the Highest Diploma。

  • The original or notarized copy of the Highest Diploma’s transcripts.

  • Foreigner Physical Examination Form: Applicants must undergo a medical examination following the items listed in the form. The examination results are valid for 6 months.

  • Financial Statement: Either the family deposit certificate, property certificate, or parent/guardian income certificate with a recommended minimum value of USD 5,000 or equivalent.
