Dalian University of Technology (DUT), a national key university under the direct leadership of the Ministry of Education, is one of the “211 project" and "985 project" key universities in China. Founded in 1949, Dalian University of Technology is one of the top national universities in China, and is a highly focused science and engineering research and education institution. (1) History

Previously known as Dalian University, Dalian University of Technology was founded in 1949. In July 1950, the School of Engineering separated from Dalian University and became Dalian Institute of Technology. Due to the rearrangement of the Ministry of Education to enhance development of education and construction of new born China, several departments, including Electrical Engineering, Physics and Law, were transferred to other universities and institutions. Meanwhile, scholars from other universities came to enlarge the departments of Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering. The university started to expand right after the rearrangement, attracting more scholars and funding. To ensure future growth, the then-headmaster, Bochuan Qu, strategically moved the university's main campus to the bay area of suburban Dalian.

In October 1960, DIT became one of the 26 key national universities directly under the State Ministry of Education. Graduate School of DIT was established in April 1986. In March 1988, DIT changed its name into current Dalian University of Technology (DUT).

(2) Discipline and programs

Dalian University of Technology keeps the education of talents as its primary mission and attaches equal importance to undergraduate and graduate programs. It has formed a multi-disciplinary system which focuses on science and engineering and coordinates science, engineering, economics, management, humanities, law, philosophy and arts. It has now 260 Master Degree Programs, 155 Doctoral Programs, 24 Post-Doctoral research centers and 23 National Key Disciplines. Dalian University of Technology has now over 34,700 full-time students, including over 3,700 Ph. D. students, 9,600 Master students, 20,700 undergraduates and more than 700 international students.

(3) Academic facilities and scientific research

Currently, the total number of Dalian University of Technology staff is 3762, including 649 professors and 1153 associate professors. The libraries of DUT has more than 3.047 million books, with more than 58000 Chinese and foreign electronic journals. Dalian University of Technology is the home to three national key laboratories, three national-level Engineering Research Centers, one national-level Engineering Laboratory, one National University Science Park, one national-level Technology Transfer Center, five Key Laboratories of the Ministry of Education, 17 Provincial Key Laboratories, four Engineering Research Centers of the Ministry of Education, and 15 engineering (Technology) research centers of Liaoning Province.

Since 2001, Dalian University of Technology has won a total of 42 national awards for scientific and technological achievements, 407 ministerial and provincial awards for scientific and technological achievements. Since 2012, Dalian University of Technology has been awarded 2 outstanding Chinese patents as the first owner’s affiliation. In 2012, about 1891documents has been cited into SCIE, including 1875 papers, ranking 15th of all universities in China. There are more than 1880 papers have been cited into EI, ranking the 7th of all universities in China.

Dalian University of Technology has built steady long-term relationships with 192 universities and research institutes in 27 countries and regions from all over the world, such as Technische Universitaet München in Germany, Durham University, University of Illinois at Chicago, Ghent University, Technical University of Denmark and etc. 339 well-known foreign scholars and professors are hired for researching and lecturing. In recent years, academic exchange oversea amounts more than 1600 times every year. Until now, there are more than 700 international students studying at Dalian University of Technology. 

International students at Dalian University of Technology have many different choices about living. There are three kind of room are provided for them, single room, double room and home-stay rooms. International students can choose they room they want to live according to their needs.

Single rooms and double rooms are well equipped with Internet Access, Desk, Wardrobe, Bathroom, and Shower. There are public kitchens, Washing Machine, and Microwave Oven provided for international students. If international students want to know more and learn more Chinese cultural and language, they can choose home-stay rooms, which is a great way to help them to know more about China.

School of International Education (SIE) of Dalian University of Technology, founded on March 8, 2013, is a multifunctional administrative and academic unit responsible for the admission, education, and management of international students. Until now, there are more than 700 international students studying here. International students actively participate in school activities and make their school life becoming more colorful.

Many international students come to China for studying and they want to try many delicious Chinese food. In order to meet their needs, Dalian University of Technology provides about ten canteens for international students with delicious Chinese food and great variety of food coming from different places. Native food at many canteens is provided for international students, and they can learn more Chinese culture from these delicious Chinese food.

All food in these canteens is delicious, clean with great flavors, different taste and reasonable price. If international students want to try something different, restaurants around the campus are good choices for them.

1. I really want to study at your University, but I can’t speak Chinese, can I be instructed in English?

Answer: The program is fully English medium program.

2. How is the living standard in Dalian city? What about the canteen in the University?

Answer: The living expense here is medium, for example, approximately 150 USD for your food per month. There are many different canteens with different taste for international students.

3. How can I arrive in Dalian city, the location of University?

Answer: If there is no direct flight to Dalian, the recommended flight is transit from Beijing to Dalian (around 1.5 hours), or transit from Shanghai to Dalian (around 2 hours). Students can choose the travel route according to their location.

4. Can you send a vehicle to take us from the local airport to the University?

Answer: the university can provide airport pick up service for the students in group from Dalian Zhoushuizi International Airport to the campus. But students should send detailed departure schedule to our university’s representative minimum 3 days in advance so that we can pick up without any delay. Airport Pick-up Service is only available on duty hours in Registration time.

5. How can I exchange some Chinese currency for my pocket money when I just arrived in China?

Answer: Students can exchange some Chinese currency in bank for shuttle/bus ticket fare and pocket money in the big international airport when they arrive in China. And students can buy telephone card from business counter in the airport to give international call and domestic call if students need.

6. How are the transportation, telecom and internet settled in Dalian City?

Answer: there is one airport, two train stations and many buses to many cities in China. There are convenient public facilities for telecom and internet, you can buy telecom card to call in any time and there are lots of internet pub for going on internet.

7. How is the climate in Dalian City?

Answer: Dalian has a monsoon-influenced humid continental climate. The annual mean temperature is 10.90 °C (51.6 °F).

8. How is China’s Engineering Education in the world?

Answer: China is a largest producer of engineering graduates in the world. 

9. How is China’s Business and Management Education in the world?

Answer: China has become the second largest economy and this has influential role in the global economy.

10. Can a student open a Bank Account? 

Answer: Yes, a student could open a bank account in his name to keep his surplus money safe. He could also use this account to have his family remit any additional money as required.

11. Is learning Chinese language compulsory? 

Answer: Even though the program is taught in English, but international students must study Chinese language according to Ministry of Education, China. Chinese language classes are just offered three times per week, and international students are required to pass the basic level. Besides, it will be helpful for students in daily life if they learn some Chinese language.

12. What is the voltage used in China?
