Chang'an University is a university located in Xi'an, China. Chang'an is the ancient name of Xi'an which means "Perpetual Peace" in Classical Chinese. It is one of the State "211 Project" key development universities and is directly under the administration of the Ministry of Education. It has five campuses (The Main, Yanta, Xiaozhai, Weishui and Taibai) in Xi'an.
1. History
Chang'an University was merged by the former Xi'an Highway University, Xi'an Engineering Institute and Northwest Institute of Construction Engineering on April 18th, 2000.
2.Discipline and programs
Chang’an University has 22 schools or departments, 5 national-level key disciplines, 26 provincial-level key disciplines, 8 post-doctoral research stations, 8 first-level and 50 second-level doctoral programs, 26 first-level and 118 second-level master programs, 78 undergraduate specialties as well as 9 fields of degree conferment of Mater of Public Management and Master of Industrial and Commercial Management, and 16 enrollment fields of masters in engineering. Furthermore, it is one of the national bases of culture and quality education for college students, and the selection and training base for reserved officers of the Chinese People's Armed Police.
3.Academic facilities and Scientific research
Chang'an University has perfect teaching facilities and advanced research equipments. It owns 20 key subjects and laboratories of national, provincial and ministry level. Among the national colleges, it has the sole high-speed automobile testing ring road, the comprehensive testing site, the top-grade gymnasium and playground.
Chang’an University now has over 1,900 full-time teachers, including 3 academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 national “Thousand Talents Program” expert, 3 "Yangtze River Scholar" chair professors, more than 1,060 full and associate professors, of whom more than 150 are doctoral supervisors, and more than 780 are master supervisors, 7 national and provincial level experts with outstanding contributions, and 80 teachers who have been enrolled on the advanced talent list of the “National Talent Project of the New Millennium” or have been entered in the advanced talent bank of Ministry of Education, Ministry of Transportation and Shaanxi Province.
Striving along the route of combining teaching, scientific research and school-run industries, in recent years, the university has accomplished thousands of scientific research projects.
4.Great achievements
Chang’an University has accomplished more than 6,000 scientific research projects, including the national “973” and “863” key projects, the National Natural Science Foundation research projects. 18 projects were awarded national technology prizes including the first prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award. Over 500 projects were awarded ministerial and provincial level prizes. The university has accomplished more than 360 education teaching research projects including national planning project More than 50 projects were awarded the national and provincial Teaching Achievement Award. Its annual scientific research funds sum up to more than 700 million CNY.
The national level academic journals published by Chang’an University include China Journal of Highway and Transport, Journal of Traffic and Transportation Engineering, Journal of Architecture and Civil Engineering, Journal of Earth Sciences and Environment, Journal of Chang’an University (Natural Science Edition), Journal of Chang’an University (Social Science Edition), Road Machinery & Construction Mechanization and Automobile Drivers. Among them, 2 are national key development journals, 3 are Ei database entry journals, and 4 are Chinese core journals. China Journal of Highway and Transport and Journal of Traffic and Transportation Engineering are in the rank of “100 Remarkable Academic Journals of China”.
5.Communication and international cooperation
Chang’an University is also one of the first universities which have provided foreign aid education and recruited students from regions like Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Following the trend of the internationalization of higher education of the country, in recent year, the university has strengthened its exchange and cooperation with more than 120 institution of higher education and scientific research institutions from countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, Ukraine, Japan and the South Korea. It has also joined the Sino-US ““1 +2 +1” Talent Nurturing Program and established an international universities league with Rostov State Architectural University from Russia. The Chang’an Foreign Language Training Centre of the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs is located here. In recent year, the university has hosted and sponsored a series of high-level international and national academic conferences.
Beijing Normal University (BNU) provides safe, sanitary, harmonious, and convenient living conditions to international students. Student apartment are equipped with TV, telephone, electric fan, and other functional furniture. Broadband communication is available in each dormitory. The reception hall, clean and elegant, is provided with desks and chairs and also a newspaper stand. Dormitory management custodians care for every student, and they provide comprehensive front desk and cleaning services. BNU invests a large amount of money in rewards given to the good dormitories regarding its cleanness and harmony and regularly organizes safety training and dormitory inspection. Dormitories for international students are located in different building and have different price according to their size.

Chang'an University is one of the State "211 Project" key development universities, is a college accepting the students with Chinese government scholarship, and is also one of the earliest universities in western China recruiting the overseas students. The enrollment of international students commenced in 1956. Till now, the university has turned out nearly 2000 graduates of different kinds for nearly 40 countries such as the United States, Germany, Japan, Australia, Vietnam, Tanzania and Yemen. Among the graduates, two are serving as ministers; one of our alumni is the ambassador and one is embassy minister in China. The number of international students in university now is over 500.
There are numerous colleges, scientific research and cultural units around Chang’an University, and it has a dense learning atmosphere. The university covers a land of 200 hectares, establishing five main campus areas, such as the Main Campus, Yanta Campus, Xiaozhai Campus, Weishui Campus and Taibai Campus. Each campus has beautiful environment, complete living facilities such as dining hall, supermarket, soccer playground, gymnasium, tennis court, swimming pool etc. The overseas student apartment is equipped with telephone, air conditioning, television, washroom and the shower facilities, Internet access etc. Chang'an University tries its best to make international students live comfortably in campus.
Chang'an University has five campuses. There are on-campus canteens at each campus. Freshmen usually study at Weishui campus where located two on-campus canteens: three-storey eastern cafeteria and two-story western cafeteria. Eastern cafeteria is called ShuHuiyuan, with elevator inside. The third floor is divided into two parts, one part provides Xi'an local characteristic food such as roujiamo, yangrou paomo, etc., the other part provides Muslim food. Western cafeteria is called ZiLanyuan which is mainly characterized by delicious snacks, like small steamed stuffed bun, pancake, pastries, cookie, etc. Self-service beverage machines are also available. Prepaid dining card can be used to purchase food at the campus dining halls, and the price of food is reasonable.
At the west end of the school is a street, restaurants there can provide delivery service to students. There are also many eating houses outside of the school. The portions were generous in Xi’an restaurants, and food is not very expensive.
1. I really want to study at your University, but I can’t speak Chinese, can I be instructed in English?
Answer: The program is fully English medium program.
2. How is the living standard in Xi'an city? What about the canteen in the University?
Answer: The living expense here is about 150 USD for your food per month. International students at Chang'an University have multiple dining choices including Muslim food, delicious snacks, and Xi'an local characteristic food.
3. How can I arrive in Xi'an city, the location of University?
Answer: If there is no direct flight to Xi’an city, then recommended flight is transit from Hong Kong to Xi'an (around 2 hours and 40 minutes), or transit from Beijing to Xi'an (around 2 hours and 10 minutes), or transit from Shanghai to Xi'an (around 2.5 hours). Students can choose the travel route according to their location.
4. Can you send a vehicle to take us from the local airport to the University?
Answer: The university can provides airport pick-up service to international students in group from the local airports - Xi’an Xianyang International Airport to the campus. But international students should send detailed departure, transfer, arrival schedule to us minimum 3 days in advance so that the university can pick up without any delay.
5. How can I exchange some Chinese currency for my pocket money when I just arrived in China?
