Founded in 1903, Central China Normal University (CCNU) is a comprehensive and prestigious university on the list of “211 National Project” and "985 National Project". During a splendid legacy of over 100 years, CCNU has developed a profound historical tradition. 1. Long History

The predecessor of Central China Normal University is the combination of Huachung University, Chunghua University and the Pedagogical College of Zhongyuan University, with Huachung University as the main part. Huachung University was the largest and most influential mission university in south central China, and it developed from Boone College which was founded in 1903. In 1951, the Public Huazhong University came into being after the Pedagogical College of Zhongyuan University merged with Huachung University. Then it was reorganized into Huazhong Higher Normal College in 1952 and later renamed Central China Normal College in 1953. In 1985, the university was formally entitled Central China Normal University and Deng Xiaoping, one of the founders of Zhongyuan University, inscribed the new name of the university. In 1993, President Jiang Zemin wrote an inscription for the university “Developing normal education, improving the nation’s quality”.

2. Overview of Campus

Located in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province, Central China Normal University is a key comprehensive university directly under the administration of the Chinese Ministry of Education. The campus of over 2,000 Mu (330 acres) is nestled on Guizi Hill, bordering South Lake.

Currently, the full-time enrollment of CCNU has exceeded 23,000 students, among which 7,000 are postgraduates. Since 2001, the graduate employment rate has remained above 95%, ranking among the top in China. The university is one of the first institutions being authorized to enroll overseas students in China, and it is one of the few National Chinese Language Education Bases accredited by the State Council. At present, the university has over 1,600 overseas students from 80 countries for long-term study or for pursuing degrees.

3. Discipline Construction and Laboratories

Ministry of Education of China chose Central China Normal University as one of the national key universities which has a number of important and promoted disciplines to international academic level. They consist of Chinese and Foreign Political Systems, Theoretical Physics, Scientific Socialism and International Communist Movement, Education Theory, Chinese Modern and Contemporary History, Literature and Art Studies, Pesticide Science and Basic Principles of Marxism.

Campus Canteens

Students are able to have meals in any of the seven canteens with a campus ID card. If money deposit is needed, the service desks and ID card machines in every canteen are available within opening hours. Business hours: 6:00~9:00 for breakfast, 10:30~13:00 for lunch, 16:30~19:00 for dinner. Take-out service is available in all canteens.

The East Canteen I

The East Canteen I is located near the postgraduate dormitories in the east district. Different varieties of snacks are served. Lies in a convenient location, the canteen enjoys top priority among students.

The East Canteen II

The East Canteen II is located in Yuanbao Shan district, near the undergraduate dormitories in the east district. The Muslim canteen is on the first floor, serves various kinds of special snacks such as fried noodles and braised chicken with potato and green pepper. The Shan Cheng Restaurant on the second floor is perfect to hold dinner parties and class activities for its bright space and delicious food with reasonable price.

Xuezi Canteen

Xuezi Canteen is located beside the East Basketball Court. The buffet on the second floor is worth mentioning, along with the western snacks provided there. Also, a bakery and a western-style fast food restaurant, Paile Hamburger is right beside the canteen.

1. I really want to study in your university, but I can’t speak Chinese, can I be instructed in English?

Answer: The program is fully English medium program.

2. How is the living standard in Wuhan city? What about the canteen in the University?

Answer: The living expense here is approximately 150 USD for your food per month. There are seven canteens in the campus of Central China Normal University. Buffet, western snacks and Muslim canteen are available. Bakery, western style fast food restaurant and Paile Hamburger are beside the canteen.

3. How can I arrive in Wuhan city, the location of University?

Answer: If there is no direct flight to Wuhan, the recommended flight is transit from Hongkong to Wuhan (around 2 hours), or transit from Beijing to Wuhan (around 2 hours), or transit from Shanghai to Wuhan (around 1.5 hours), or transit from Guangzhou to Wuhan (around 1.5 hours). International students can choose the travel route according to their location.

4. Can you send a vehicle to take us from the local airport to the University?

Answer: Sure, we can provide airport pick up service for the students from airport - Wuhan Tianhe International Airport to campus. But students should send detailed departure, transfer and arrival schedule to the university’s representative minimum 3 days in advance of registration date so that the university can pick up without any delay. Airport Pick-up Service is only available during on-duty hours in Registration time.

5. How can I exchange some Chinese currency for my pocket money when I just arrived in China?

Answer: Students can exchange some Chinese currency in bank for shuttle/bus ticket fare and pocket money in the big international airport when they arrive in China. And students can buy telephone card from business counter in the airport to give international call and domestic call if students need.

6. How are the transportation, telecom and internet in Wuhan City?

Answer: Wuhan is the center of central China and national transportation center. It is very convenient with one airport, three train stations and many buses to many cities in China. There are convenient public facilities for telecom and internet, you can buy telecom card to call in any time and there are lots of internet pubs for going on internet.

Answer: Wuhan's climate is humid subtropical with abundant rainfall and four distinctive seasons. Wuhan is known for its oppressively humid summers, when dewpoints can often reach 26 °C (79 °F) or more. Spring and autumn are generally mild, while winter is cool with occasional snow. The annual mean temperature is 16.63 °C (61.9 °F).

Chinese language classes are just offered in the first two years, three times per week, and international students are required to pass the basic level.
